The Days of Lenton
Dear Linda: (from my mother, in
Birmingham, Alabama, March 17, 2005)
A wonderful friend of ours - Jack Zylman - has been
sending us Lenten messages; he is a minister and
chaplain and a very wise person. This one (the
Thirtieth Day, below) just
arrived and I think you will find it insightful.
Jack is also a first-line activist - his wife, Mike
Wilson, is also. Mike is Head of Women's studies at
UAB, whom I have mentioned to you before. Such a
dynamite couple - actually, they met in jail - working
with prisoners. Among other things, Jack is head of
Alabama Amnesty - lots of other areas of concern.

The period of Lent, the forty days leading to
Easter, are a traditional period of meditation and
fasting in the Christian tradition. Within that
tradition, this is intended to prepare a person for
dealing with justice and love as they affect his or
her life. Politically progressive people and those
whose philosophies and theologies do not fit easily
into traditional religious understandings often do
not find this period of the year to be of use.
These Lines are based on the thought of Liberation
Theology. It is hoped that these mediations,
literature and essays make the season accessible and
useful to all of us.
